Add Pizazz With Advanced Knitting Techniques

Knitting Techniques

Most knitters only learn the basic stitches. Knitting techniques extend beyond the knit and purl stitches. There are many methods that add pizazz to your knitting. You can modify simple patterns through color, texture, and structure. The new knitting technique may be hard t grasp but they are not hard once you learn them.

There are three styles of color work in knitting :fair isle, intrasia, and mosaic. The color work method allows multiple colors on the same row. Fair Isle knitting originated in Scandinavia and uses two colors ; one floating behind the work while not in use. Fair Isle knitting is often used when knitting in the round and for outer garments like jacket and sweaters. Intrasia knitting is worked in the round but used to make geometric shapes and other decorative items. Mosaic knitting allows the use of one color at a time.

Aran Knitting is when you use one color of yarn to make patterns and cables using various stitches. Sometimes it is called Aran Sweater Knitting in the past because the techniques were used to make sweaters. You need a cable needle to work Aran knitting. Cable needles come in an assortment of sizes. It’s mostly a personal preference since they perform the same task.

Knit lace is the most decorative type of knitting made with specific increases and decreases. Because of the order, stitches can vary from simple to complex. Smaller lace is much more difficult. Stitches should appear on both sides of the fabric.

Structural knitting sometimes involves mobius and entralac knitting. Both knitting techniques involve modifying and inverting rows to shape the structure of the piece. Entralac is used to make faux woven fabric and mobius creates flipped but joined circles resembling mobius strips.

Some knitting patterns require combining one, two, or all techniques. The techniques make unique sweaters and shawls. The good thing about knitting is you can experiment and use the techniques you like. You have the option of pulling something out if you make mistakes or aren’t satisfied with the result. Learning advanced knitting techniques will enable you to make stunning projects for gifts or yourself.
